As per southern tradition, Francesco Lonoce bears the same name as his grandfather and it is known that for a breadwinner it is a source of pride. At 87, grandfather Ciccillo leaves the family the choice of whether or not to sell their vineyards after a dedicated life and many compliments on his wine. This is how Calitro was born, with an innovative look and an important bottle to support the weight of the history it carries with it.
Francesco tells us that he believed in those vines, love for his family, linked to memories with his grandparents, he began this adventure and in 2014 he designed the new logo for Calitro, the nickname of the family to be used. Thus began a growth in terms of quality and quantity, from 15 hectares to 80, a success both in the Italian and international market.
Vineyards a few tens of km from the sea, in Agro di Manduria, Sava and Lizzano, typical Apulian sapling vines, harvest carried out the third decade of September after a slight enthusiasm of the grapes on the vine, four months in second and month oak barriques passage, all this is the Negroamaro Ausilio 2016.
A representative grape of Salento, Negroamaro enjoys greater success every year thanks to the work of companies such as Calitro. Poured into the glass we admire an almost impenetrable ruby, it gives us a wide bouquet, a balsamic note accompanies the quince and the red fruit jam. Like any good wine, the wait and after a few minutes opens with a more complex note, from the bitter sweet of cocoa powder to tobacco, a dark but enveloping note. A robust wine, ready to drink but able to give excellent drinks in the future; unobtrusive tannin, a light bitterness typical of this wine and a pleasant softness on the palate.
It combines well with local cuisine a base of fresh pasta, roasted or stewed meat, excellent with lamb but above all I recommend it with aged cheeses in front of a fireplace in good company.
